I. General Questions

  1. How to order correctly
    • Standard Square and Hexagon Broaches you select by the corresponding drill hole diameter and then simply order them by their Art. No.

    • Standard Keyway Broaches you select by the drill hole diameter of the slot. Corresponding to the type of the broach (Index I - VI) you select then a bushing, which has to fit into the shaft. Make sure that the type-number of broach and bushing are the same. A Type I broach only fits in a Type I bushing, a Type II broach only in a Type II bushing etc.
      If more than one pass is necessary, calibrated shims were needed which are supplied for each metric keyway broach and therefore do not need to be ordered seperately.

    • Special Broaches: For ordering a Special Broach we need  the following informations:
      - material to be broached
      - (mild steel, stainless steel, VA, brass, plastics etc.),
      - length of cut,
      - required tolerance,
      - a complete dimensioned blueprint (if possible)
        or a sketch of the workpiece.
  2. Can I deduce from the order number to the tool?

    Yes you can!

    • The first two numbers of the Art. No. specify the broach resp. the bushing.
      11 = Keyway Broach,
      33 = Standard Square Broach,
      12 = Hexagon Broach,
      22 = Bushing.
    • The third number specifies the type of the keyway broach (type mumbers 1 - 6 according to 6 Rückenbreiten),
      For all other broaches this third number is 0.
    • The two last numbers specify the size of the tool (the width  of the broach or the wrench size of the hexagon/square)
      resp. the diameter of the bushing.

II. Troubleshooting with regard to Use and Application

  1. Poor Finish Quality

    Possible Causes:

    • material too soft
    • broach incorrect
    • coolant improperly applied
    • coolant incorrect
    • dull or poorly sharpened broach
  2. Chatter Marks

    Possible Causes:

    • Broach too sharp (honing of teeth recommended)
    • coolant incorrect or improperly supplied
    • coolant incorrect
    • lower broach speed required
    • dull or poorly sharpened broach
    • tooth space incorrect
  3. Excessive Edge Wear

    Possible Causes:

    • abrasive material
    • coolant incorrect or improperly supplied
    • coolant incorrect
    • broaching speed incorrect
    • incorrect type of HSS
  4. Broach Drifting

    Possible Causes:

    • support and alignment of broach incorrect
